11:46 am: The Red Sox announced Iglesias signing into a Major League contract and added him to the active roster. In addition, Boston reinstated the reliever Josh taylor from the Covid-19 list, selected the right-handed contract Happy Michel and returned Covid replacement players Cutter Crawford, Jack Lopez and John schreiber at Triple-A Worcester. None of the three had to go through waivers to be sent and removed from the list of 40 men because they were specifically named as Covid-19 replacements.
11:30 am: Shortstop Jose iglesias, who was released by the Angels this weekend, is at Fenway Park today, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe (Twitter link). Alex Speier of the Globe tweets that the Red Sox are expected to announce Iglesias signing shortly. He is represented by the MVP Sports Group.
The Red Sox, in the midst of a Covid-19 outbreak in their clubhouse, currently have 11 players in the Covid protocol. This group includes infielders Alex Bogaerts, Christian Arroyo, Enrique Hernandez and Jairo Munoz, leaving the Sox in dire need of help on the ground. Jonathan arauz and Jack Lopez have lined up in the middle of the infield for the past few days, but Iglesias thinks to step into that mix and start recording regular reps as the team awaits the return of Bogaerts and others.
It’s been a tough season for Iglesias at Anaheim – his only year with the Angels. The 31-year-old hasn’t been able to replicate last year’s huge on-plate production – or even come particularly close. It was only 150 home plate appearances, but Iglesias posted a career-best batting line of .373 / .400 / .556 with the Orioles in 2021 before returning to a .259 / .295 slash. /.375 which is more in line with his overall career figures.
More troubling than a return to the flat standard, however, has been the decline in Iglesias’ glove work. He made 16 errors in 961 innings this year after committing just 18 errors in 2,393 2018-2020 innings combined. Iglesias has never made more than 11 errors in a season but already has 10 pitching errors on his own, in addition to six field errors. Defensive runs saved put Iglesias at a stunning under-21 this season, while his ultimate zone rating is at a career low of under-4.9.
Despite defensive struggles, Iglesias is now returning to his original organization as a veteran backup at a critical time. The Sox are unlikely to crush the Rays, who lead them by eight games in the standings, but hope to maintain a three-game lead over the second-place Mariners AL Wild Card. They are also only half a game away from the Yankees for first place in the AL Wild Card and would surely like to get a head start on their big rivals in order to gain the advantage on the pitch in a theoretical showdown. with the Wild Cards.
The Red Sox initially signed Iglesias in September 2009 after leaving his native Cuba. He spent the following seasons climbing the minor league ranks and making a handful of big-league appearances before settling as a shortstop in 2013. However, Boston sent him to the Tigers that summer. in a three-team exchange that sent Jake peavy from White Sox to Red Sox and Avisail Garcia from Detroit to Chicago. (The White Sox picked up both Frankie Montas and JB Wendelken Red Sox on the market as well.)
It’s sort of a full time for Iglesias, who won’t be eligible for the playoff list due to joining the organization after August 31. He will always have the opportunity to help his home club reach the playoffs. again, though, and this late change of scenery may also provide him with an offseason for other teams in the league as he prepares to return to free agency this winter.
