Since launching in November, the PlayStation 5 has delivered a number of games worthy of all the fervor of trying (and generally failing) to buy one. The control! The first part focus! It’s a real console launch, okay. But these games stood above the rest. Meet the finalists for Siliconera’s 2020 PS5 Game of the Year!
These awards represent the consensus of Siliconera staff. For more of the Year’s award selections, check out our Game of the Year 2020 archive.
Winner: Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Insomniac’s web tracking brought style, visual flair, and a fun world to explore to the PS5’s launch lineup. Miles’ signing powers are added to a reworked and refined combat system. Crisp writing and great vocal work tell a more focused story. More we see of Miles Morales Spider Man, plus it sounds like a modern, inspired franchise. This game is no exception.
Astro Games Room
Is this a technical demo? A little bit. Is it short? Sure. But we had a blast with Astro Games Room from beginning to end. More than any other game in the console’s launch lineup, it looked fundamentally new and next-gen. It’s a nostalgic trip for longtime PlayStation fans, but even new gamers can appreciate the focused charm and polish.
Souls of the demon
Players are more prepared to play and enjoy the demanding combat Souls of the demon than ever. Bluepoint therefore didn’t really need to do so much! They did it anyway, and the result is a game with environments and enemies whose aesthetics match the greatness of From Software’s original design. It’s a centerpiece for hardware when you want it most, and it always contains what has been proven to work. Souls game balance.
