Silverado ZRX will supply the GM F-150 Raptor Rival

GM is currently working on a new off-road variant of the Chevrolet Silverado that is expected to become a rival of the GM F-150 Raptor, as indicated by our sister publication, GM Authority. The new all-terrain vehicle is dubbed the Silverado ZRX and is expected to be launched for the 2022 model year.

According to sources close to future GM products, who spoke with GM Authority based on anonymity, the new rival of the GM F-150 Raptor should offer improved suspension, highlighted by MultiMatic's DSSV dampers, as well as front and rear electronic lockers and new bumper treatments that will allow more aggressive angles of departure and approach.

Essentially, the configuration will be identical to that of the current Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, instead of the previous GMC Sonoma ZRX, designed more like a high-performance street truck. In addition to fighting the F-150 Raptor, the new Silvy off-road will face the Ram 1500 Rebel TRX.

It should also be noted that the new Silverado ZRX will not be a direct rival for the Ford F-150 Raptor. While the Raptor is a trophy truck jumping dunes for the street, the Silvy ZRX will be more of a rock trail champion, like the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.

The new rival of the GM F-150 Raptor will be equipped with the Silverado's naturally aspirated, high-performance 6.2-liter V8 engine, and will likely deliver the same 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The output will be routed via a 10-speed automatic transmission. GM Authority also reports that the all-terrain vehicle can come with a 3.0L six-cylinder Duramax diesel.

As a reference, the current F-150 Raptor features a 3.5L DOHC EcoBoost 3.5L double-turbo V6 producing 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. Everything happens on the ground via a standard 10-speed automatic transmission, while the Fox Racing shock absorbers, an electronic locking rear differential and the terrain management system help keep the shiny side.

In August, GM filed a trademark registration application to register the ZRX name in the United States and Canada. It seems now that this name will be applied to a new rival of the GM F-150 Raptor, which will occupy a place above the Silverado Trail Boss in the rhythm of the Silverado model.

The new rival of the GM F-150 Raptor should be abandoned for the 2022 model year and could have a preview of the conceptual model before the official launch of the production.
