The world’s greatest gymnast, Simone Biles, has withdrawn from the scheduled Olympic events for the third time this week. On Tuesday, she retired from the women’s team competition. On Thursday, Biles said she would not be making the all-around final.
Friday – Saturday in Tokyo – USA Gymnastics released a statement saying Biles will also not be competing this weekend on uneven bars or vault. She will continue to be assessed to determine her availability for her last two events, the floor exercise on Monday and the balance beam on Tuesday.
Biles will be replaced in the vault by MyKayla Skinner. Already qualified Suni Lee will represent the United States on uneven bars this weekend. But no other American gymnast has qualified for the floor exercise or the balance beam. This means that if Biles does not participate, the United States is excluded from these events.

USA Gymnastics’ statement reads as follows:
Today, after further consultation with medical staff, Simone Biles has decided to withdraw from the vault and uneven bars event finals. She will continue to be assessed daily to determine if she will compete in the finals for the floor exercise and balance beam. MyKayla Skinner, who had the fourth best vault score in qualifying, will compete in the vault finals for the United States alongside Jade Carey, who finished with the second best score. We remain in awe of Simone, who continues to handle this situation with courage and grace, and all the athletes who mobilized in these unexpected circumstances. Biles, five-time world champion and reigning Olympic all-around champion. The result ends a decade of event dominance for the US team, which won gold in 2012 and 2016.

Asked about her withdrawals this week, Biles said she did it “to focus on my well-being and, you know, there’s more to life than gymnastics,” she said. “It’s very unfortunate that it must have happened at this point because I really wanted these Olympics to go a little better, but we’re going to take it one day at a time, and we’ll see how the rest goes. “
