Sinclair will buy Disney's sports networks under a $ 10 billion contract: WSJ

(Reuters) – Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., the largest US radio station owner, has signed a deal worth more than $ 10 billion to purchase 21 Walt Disney Co regional sports networks, reported Thursday the Wall Street Journal.

The agreement, which would include sports channels in Los Angeles and Detroit, should be announced Friday, the paper said, citing people close to the case.

Disney and Sinclair were not immediately available for comment.

Disney acquired the sports networks as part of its $ 71 billion acquisition of the $ 71 billion Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. film and television assets.

The company agreed to sell the networks after the US Department of Justice said Disney, the owner of the ESPN cable network, was to divest Fox networks that broadcast sports programming to regional and local markets.

Disney completed the acquisition of Fox's film and television assets in March, almost a year after winning the war against cable operator Comcast Corp.

The potential deal for Disney's sports networks would come after Tribune Media Co ended the sale of 42 TV channels in 33 markets in Sinclair last year.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Liberty Media Corp and Big 3 Basketball LLC, whose management also includes Jeff Kwatinetz and rapper and actor Ice Cube, have also claimed Disney channels.
