A national child health survey focused on street safety for children. It turns out that 18% of children never wear a bike helmet when they ride a bike.

The National Children's Health Survey conducted by CS Mott Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan found that 18% of children did not follow basic safety strategies when using the bike, not wearing a helmet biking. The survey made suggestions for the safety of children on the street.

The dangers of cycling without a bike helmet

Mott survey co-director and pediatrician Gary Freed, MD, MPH, explained, "Helmets are essential to prevent head injuries in the event of a fall or accidental shock from a child. motorized wheeled vehicles without ever using a helmet. "

The survey showed that:

• Older children (aged 11 to 13) are more likely to walk on the street (with or without bike paths) than younger children.
• More than 426,000 children visited an emergency department in 2015 following an injury related to a wheeled sport (according to a 2017 report from Safe Kids Worldwide and Makewide Happen from Nationwide)
• Eighteen percent of children never wear a bike helmet when riding, according to their parents; and
• Fifty-eight percent of children do not wear a helmet on a skateboard and 61 percent wear one while driving a scooter.

Freed adds, "Unfortunately, a significant number of parents surveyed said their children did not routinely follow basic wheeled safety strategies. Our report suggests that families should take more precautions to keep children safe, including helmet use and street safety. "

Freed notes that wearing the helmet is not enough to ensure safety. The helmet should fit snugly to the head and used properly.
