The first phase of the search for a new batch of appointed MPs (NMP) was completed yesterday with the receipt by the Office of the Clerk of Parliament of 48 proposal forms after a month's claim of names.

Among those competing for the NMP positions this year, Woon Tien Wei, fine arts teacher and founder of a purpose-built artistic group non-profit, Felicia Low, both announced last month represent the arts sector. Meanwhile, the People's Association (PA) has appointed four people to represent the civic and popular sector. She refused to name the four.
They are among the names proposed by seven functional groups: business and industry; professions; the labor movement; social service organizations; the civic sector and people; higher education institutions; and the media, arts and sports organizations
The general public was also invited to submit names to the Special 8-member Select Committee to select NMPs. The committee, chaired by Parliament Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin, will now select qualified candidates who have made outstanding public services, honored Singapore or distinguished themselves in their respective fields.
In choosing the final list, the committee will interview the candidates and solicit the views of the elected members.
A person is qualified to be named NMP if she is Singaporean, 21 years old or older, and registered on the current register of electors.
introduced in 1990, is intended to provide non-partisan views to Parliament.
There can be up to nine NMPs in each term, which lasts two and a half years. The current term ends in September.
