Aston Martin continues its quest for Ferrari by unveiling a 340 km / h road car designed to enhance the brand's reputation for speed and luxury.
The DBS Superleggera will be the fastest standard production model of the British company, competing with Ferrari's 812 Superfast, which shares the same top speed.
Revealed in London, Aston will sell 225,000 pounds ($ 298,000) in the UK.
His latest addition to the Super GT segment, which focuses on high speeds and long-distance driving, is designed to remind customers that Aston Martin is not limited to a simple opulence made by hand.
With the tag DBS, it revives a nameplate appeared in 1967 and presented in two James Bond spies. Superleggera, or super lightweight, refers to the pioneering Italian construction methods developed to overcome the last iota of performance.
CEO Andy Palmer said the DBS Superleggera, built to replace the Vanquish S, will make Aston Martin at the "Super GT sector summit" and will act as a "halo" model, supporting sales across the lineup by putting focus on the brand identification information at high speed.
In a crack in Maranello, Italy, Ferrari, he said that the new car, powered by a 5.2-liter V12 twin-turbo engine, will develop 20% more torque – which he equates to the power of striking – that "some type of red car."
Mid-Range Advantage
Weight will be reduced and speed maximized through the coating of an aluminum chassis with carbon fiber body panels.
While Ferrari rates the 812 a half-second faster from 0 to 62 mph, achieved in just 2.9 seconds, Aston Martin boasts the benefit of 50 to 100 mph, a key measure of the ability to overtaking on main roads and highways.
Marek Reichman, Chief Creative Officer, called the DBS "raw in a suit," adding that the carbon fiber design allows for more creativity than metal, the main challenge being to ensure that 39, a composite model still has the appearance of "Visual Mass".
Reichman said in an interview at a launch event in London that the name Superleggera, while returning to the DB4 car introduced in 1958, also turns on the choice of English Ferrari names for recent models, including the 812 Superfast.
As a normal production car, there will be no cap on the production of DBS other than a limit of 7,000 units per year on the company scale that Aston Martin imposes to maintain exclusivity. The Vantage range of new generation, competitor of the Porsche 911 from 120 000 pounds, will continue to constitute the flagship offer of the group.
Aston Martin revealed last week that he had secured access to the Stowe circuit on the Silverstone track to test high-speed handling and chassis dynamics. Having a prestigious "circuit of reference" as the home of the British Grand Prix Formula 1 is another way to boost the reputation of a car manufacturer.
The company, based in Gaydon, south of Birmingham, is preparing for a possible IPO this year after generating pre-tax profit of 87 million pounds in 2017. Deliveries exceeded 5000 cars for the first time since 2008, helped by the DB11 model launched in 2016.
