Shady Grove Fertility (SGF), a Visionary Partner of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, along with other members of the community, have come together in Washington, DC to support legislative initiatives that will help 1-8 couples who experience infertility. One of the main missions of the 2018 advocacy day was that advocates adequately explain the problems that couples and individuals face in terms of infertility. This year, there were 200 lawyers from 30 different states, including SGF doctors, staff, past and present patients.
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), President, Christos Coutifaris, MD, introduced a new bill (S.2960) – the Infertility Access and Disease Act. sponsored by MP Rosa DeLauro [D-CT] and Senator Cory Booker [D-NJ]. The bill will require that health plans offered in both the group and individual markets – in addition to the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program, TRICARE, and the VA – provide coverage for the treatment of the patient. infertility. He will also ensure that these health plans cover fertility preservation services for people who need to undergo a medically necessary procedure that can cause infertility, such as chemotherapy. . Another bill the defenders discussed with congressional officials was the Health Services Act for Women and Veterans (S 700 & HR 1681). This bill allows veterans injured in the performance of their duties to have access to reproductive treatment and assistance with permanent adoption. The original bill, which was passed after the efforts of the 2016 Advocacy Day, provides for IVF coverage until September 2019, but the SGF and other members believe that it is time to make the cover permanent. Lauren and Kevin Jaye, patients of Dr. Jason Bromer from the offices of Frederick, MD and Hagerstown, MD of SGF, were present to defend the benefits of infertility at the office of Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen. Kevin is a veteran who was severely injured by an IED while serving in Iraq and required more than 30 surgeries, all of which were covered by the AV. However, the only treatment not covered, despite his injury occurring while he was serving his country, was the IVF treatment that the couple needed to have a baby.
