A video showing a misinterpreted haka for Singapore's national holiday has been criticized as disrespectful of Maori culture.
Marine group staff Keppel Corporation invented a mixture of squeaks that includes fading effects, poor timing, hand slaps and a dubious knockout of a Maori haka
The video makes part of a competition that pits government agencies, companies and schools for the best cheer before National Day and holds a prominent place on the Singapore Coconuts.
The website says the haka should be executed with the utmost respect.
"Keppel's employees in the video may not be in agreement with what the war cry represents, but they would probably do well at least not to look as clumsy as when they were there.
Comments on the site asking readers "Is this disrespectful?" Brought a quick answer.
"It's so disrespectful to Maori culture! If this must be in our parade, I am so disappointed by Singapore, "said one answer.
Says another:" Keppel should go do more research before altering the culture of others. This is not offensive, it is unpleasant. "
