The rock was picked up by images of NASA's rovers on the red planet, which provoked speculation from extraterrestrial hunters.
It looks like the rock is hovering above the floor of Mars, casting a dark shadow over the surface.
The conspiracy theorists quickly grasped the picture, claiming that it was evidence that a once-very advanced species existed or had visited Mars in the distant past.
The image was picked up by Scott C Waring, famed alien hunter.
Mr. Waring wrote on his UFO Sightings Daily website: "Now here is something you do not see every day. I found a rock hovering over the surface of Mars on a NASA photo.
"The thick rectangle-shaped rock has a rectangle-shaped shadow underneath. The object is about 10-12 inches from the surface, hovering just in place.
"This could indicate that it is an old technology, not a simple rock after all.
"Always full of power, always hovering alone, even if the rest of his art does not exist anymore.
"Probably remains of a foreign plane or a spaceship from a long time ago."
However, skeptics and NASA would say that the hovering rock and other similar discoveries are only the effects of parureidolia – a psychological phenomenon when the brain forces the eyes to see objects or familiar shapes in patterns or textures such as a rocky surface.
This is not the first time that evidence of the presence of aliens on Mars is allegedly discovered.
Earlier this year, an "extraterrestrial face" was found on a satellite image of Mars by NASA, according to other questionable claims.
Mr. Waring was convinced that it could be a rock sculpture done by a Martian race, in the same way that the ancient British cut out chalk figures on the hills like the giant of Cerene Abbas in Dorset and Long Man Wilmington in East Sussex.
However, NASA insisted that the rock is just a meteorite impact crater that was left in its unusual form by subsequent erosion.
When NASA released the picture under the caption "Alien Head", she said: "The picture shows an impact crater located at Chryse Planitia, not too far from the site of the project. Viking 1 Lander, which seems to resemble a mosquito-eyed head.
"The two strange depressions at the north end of the crater (the" eyes ") can be formed by wind or water erosion.
"This area has been altered by both processes, with water action occurring in the distant past following floods that spilled over the western Chryse Planitia from Maja Valles, and the # 39; current action of the wind in the most recent history. "
