A Finnish professional from StarCraft II has just entered history as the first non-Korean to win the StarCraft II WCS World Finals.
In the 20-year history of the StarCraft franchise, the eSport scene of the game has been dominated by Korean professionals, but this year Joona 'Serral' Sotala has shown the world that changes are happening.
"I guess that was missing from my trophy collection," said Serral after his 4-2 win over Kim Stats' Dae Yeob.
After winning several titles in 2018, Serral was the favorite for this weekend's event. Thanks to an excellent performance during the first week of the BlizzCon, Serral was able to meet his expectations and consolidate his status as the best StarCraft II player in the world.
Serral and Protoss Cho 'Maru' player Sung Choo were expected, with Maru being the Korean player to beat for the world final. However, Maru was eliminated in the quarterfinals with a 0-3 loss to Kim's Yoo Jin.
This result would finally lead to the match between Serral and Stats in the final, while the statistics dominated the OS in the semifinal 3-0.
Serral and Stats had to face the Zergs against Protoss.
After the Finnish player took the first three games, it seemed that Serral was about to win the title, but Stats was not over yet. The Protoss player fought back, winning two consecutive games and bringing the score to 3-2.
However, Serral showed why he had been dubbed the world's best zerg player until now. In a fantastic final match, in which both opponents have attacked from the air, Serral has embarked on a war of attrition, slowly using statistics in his economy.
The Finnish player definitely had the advantage, with an economy that left Stats with little chance of reversing the situation – the South Korean player held on. However, once Stats lost his mother ship to Serral's Zerg forces, Serral soon won the WCS Grand Final trophy in front of a crowd of delirious fans.

Serral is undeniably a fantastic player with his results of the last year. At the age of 20, the Finnish player s' placed at the top of the scale of StarCraft II electronic sports and not only dominated his own national circuit, but he defeated South Korea on his own ground.
2019 will be an interesting year for the StarCraft II eSports scene. Will Serral keep his dominance or will South Korea win the title of the WCS World Finals?
