The Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is now available in the Philippines at a lower price than expected. As the name suggests, this is a faded version of the original, whose Pro variant is also on sale in the country.
Xiaomi rated the Mi 8 Lite at 13,990 P (approximately $ 264) for 4GB of RAM and 64GB of native storage. You can increase the memory capacity – 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage – for 16,990 ($ 320). At these prices, you'll end up with a decent size midranger, with specifications and a slope that match, if not surpass, similar price competition.

Well, this does not look like your typical Mi handset. But do not be fooled by the questioning of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, because it is an excellent value for money. Read on to discover this colorful slot phone with two rear cameras.
Surprisingly, the Mi 8 Lite is more like an OPPO or Huawei handheld than a Xiaomi brand. It's pretty light for its size, and the usual curved and finished aesthetics of society, as seen on redmi and Max series.
The front and back panels are usually flat and rectangular – and slightly curved at the edges. The metal structure that holds the two panels together is shiny and slightly larger. It also houses the volume and power buttons, which feel like clicks and reagents, as they should. On the left you will find the hybrid rack for SIM and SD cards; you need a pin to remove.

At the bottom, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is equipped with a mono speaker; the other cutout is purely ornamental. There is also a USB-C port for charging (up to 10 watts with the supplied power supply) and transferring files. Unfortunately, you will not find a headphone jack here, but the company includes an adapter for the use of 3.5mm audio equipment.
The speaker delivers correct volume with acceptable distortion levels until higher volume settings are achieved. Private listening will be a problem if you do not already have headphones, because the Mi 8 Lite is still not delivered with a pair, unlike other Mi devices. To date, we are not surprised at a distance.
What is surprising is that the smartphone has a color gradient similar to that found on some OPPO, Vivo and Huawei handsets. Our device has a two-tone finish that changes from blue to purple, depending on the impact of light on its ultra-reflective backing material. It looks more beautiful in person than in a photo, because the mirror finish can hide the effect.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite features a serrated 6.26-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 2280 x 1080 and a 19: 9 aspect ratio. The notch itself is small – not as small as the drop-shaped cutout on the OPPO F9, Vivo V11, and OnePlus 6Talthough it is smaller than most of the cuts we have seen. It works perfectly with the camera, the speaker, the white LED notification light and two sensors.
Side covers and chin rests also take up little space, giving the caller a screen / body ratio of just over 82%. Since the screen occupies most of the front of the device, it can be problematic to use the traditional Android on-screen navigation buttons to navigate the home screen and menus. .
Fortunately, the screen also offers sliding gesture controls to navigate around MIUI 9.6 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The controls are easy to understand and will feel natural and intuitive, even for newcomers to MIUI.

The screen displays a good image: rich in color, sharp enough for most tasks and generally nice as you would expect from a mid-range smartphone. But it is not particularly bright, even when the brightness is at its maximum, which limits its usability outside, in direct sunlight.
Regarding image quality, the latest version of Xiaomi is able to take very good pictures with sufficient lighting. The main sensor of the rear-facing camera system is 12-megapixel camera and comes with a 5-megapixel secondary sensor for portraits. We have never been a big fan of artificial bokeh on smartphones and days spent with the Mi 8 Lite have not changed their minds.

The 24-megapixel front camera, on the other hand, takes really fantastic selfies with precise skin tones, and face detection works even in dark conditions. We do not think there is a better selfie camera in this price range.

… and face detection works well even in dark conditions …
… But again, we are not a big fan of artificial bokeh on smartphones.
In the classic camera app, Xiaomi has added even more artificial intelligence features to optimize photos based on the subject.
Inside, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor powered by a 3350 mAh battery. The day-to-day performances are good but, unsurprisingly, not very good. The game is usually fluid unless you mount the graphics on certain games such as PUBG Mobile and NBA 2K19.

Mobile PUBG, for example, works well with everything set to average quality in HD resolution, instead of high when the frame rate drops dramatically.
The capacity of the battery is not the largest in the world, it is usually enough to last all day, but nothing else. The Mi 8 Lite supports fast charging, although the 10-watt charger that comes with the handset does not turn it off if you're in a hurry. It takes us about two hours for the Mi 8 Lite to change from a fully discharged battery to 100%.
