The executive director of RFU, Steve Brown, will leave his post at the end of the year, announced the company.

Brown took over the role in 2017 after working at the RFU since 2011, mainly as CFO.

In a statement, he said, "This is a very difficult decision for me. I informed the RFU Council earlier this week that the time had come for me to withdraw and take some time. I loved my time in rugby and I am deeply proud to have contributed to a sport I love.

The news comes as a result of the 64 dismissals at Twickenham and fierce criticism from former managing director Francis Baron about what he calls poor financial management on the part of the union.

"It has been a fascinating 7 ½ years and a great honor to lead the SFU over the last 14 months, I'm proud of the people who make the union – including our hard-working and committed staff and brilliant volunteers who make the game. I am sad to leave, but the union is in good shape, with an excellent management team in place.

"I have always been a rugby fan, and I will always be, and I wish all our English teams, coaches and everyone involved in the game at all levels, the best of luck for the future, who announces good for the English game. "
