JAKARTA – Indonesian authorities have launched a search and rescue operation of a Lion Air plane that crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff from Jakarta on Monday morning (29 October).
JT-610 flight from Lion Air took off from Jakarta airport at 6:20 am local time, and lost contact with air traffic controllers at 6:33 am. The Boeing 737 was originally scheduled to arrive at Pangkal Pinang at 7:20.
The plane plunged into Karawang Bay in West Java province, said Muhammad Syaugi, head of the national search and rescue agency, at a press conference.
"On the surface of the sea, we found debris … the location is two nautical miles from where the plane lost touch," he said. to the press.
A tug informed the Maritime Traffic Service (VTS) of Tanjung Priok Harbor that he had spotted a plane diving into the water Monday morning, according to Jakarta-based Elshinta radio.
The plane has 189 passengers and crew members, including two babies, a child, two pilots and six cabin crew members.
In December 2014, the QZ8501 Indonesia AirAsia flight carrying 162 people plunged into the Java Sea after taking off from Surabaya to Singapore.
