SINGAPORE – A new initiative to encourage reading for children from disadvantaged backgrounds was launched on Saturday, July 28, in conjunction with National Reading Day.
National Library Council (NLB) hopes to help 100,000 NLB content and services manager Valerie Cheng said: "It is important that children have easy access to good quality books."
The new initiative is part of the National Reading Movement, a five-year campaign launched in 2016 by the NLB to encourage reading.
As part of WondeRead, the NLB will work with volunteer organizations – such as the Singapore Boy's Home and the Lakeside. Family Service Center – to deliver books to children on a quarterly basis.
Books will be selected based on the interests of each child, says Ms. Cheng.
"They may not have a favorite author yet, we will help them choose the books," she said, adding that each child will receive three books according to their preferences , as well as a book aimed at "stretching one's reading regime."
The NLB will also provide each of its partner organizations with a collection of 200 books to open a reading corner in their premises, as well as to book a book. other resources to facilitate discussions and activities around books.

National Reading Day was marked by the Big Book Giveaway, where members of the public could each bring home three books donated by the NLB, held at the National Library Building and at Vivocity

The Development Agency and the Museum of Asian Civilizations launched Artful Conversations: Stories of the Past, a resource kit containing activities and book recommendations aimed at deepening children's knowledge of Singapore's original culture and heritage. . Minister of State for Social and Family Development, Mr. Sam Tan, inaugurated a resource kit at an event at the Woodlands Regional Library on Saturday, July 28th.
More than 3,600 information kits will be distributed to all preschool institutions.
