29-year-old Neo Chun Zheng, who stabbed Soh Yuan Lin, 23 years old, once on the neck with a folding knife in front of his Boon Lay apartment on November 26, 2015, told the High Court that the words could not express his " eternal regret "for what he had done.
"I missed it completely and I can never forgive myself for everything that happened … It was a toxic relationship but it would not take away my love for her", has he said while reading a message before his conviction.
"Yuan Lin misses me immensely and I will always love her with all my heart, every day."
Neo also apologized to Soh's family. "I'm really sorry to cause you such terrible pain, sorrow and sorrow," he said.
"I can only hope that someday, you may find in your heart to forgive me."
The Straits Times understands that Soh's family members were not in court.
In court, it was revealed that his family had rejected a letter of apology from Neo after pleading guilty to a charge of guilty homicide last October.
When sentencing, the Commissioner for the Judiciary, Pang Khang Chau, concluded that there was sufficient evidence of Neo's remorse on his statements to the police.
The judge imposed on Neo a 13-year prison sentence after comparing the facts of the case to the previous cases presented by the prosecution and the defense.
Neo and Soh, a former air hostess, met when they started working at Marina Bay Sands Casino as Customer Relations Managers in April 2014.
They started going out, but Soh wanted the relationship to be "nonexclusive" and kept secret. Although Neo agreed, he had the impression of deceiving him every time he discovered that she was seeing other men.
In March 2015, he released compromising photos of her and one of their colleagues after discovering that they were intimate.
In September of the same year, Neo quarreled with Soh after discovering that she was sending an SMS to someone she had kissed at a club. She broke up with Neo later this month because she felt that he was too possessive. She told him that she wanted to stay single.
However, Neo discovered that she was using Tinder's dating app and was angry that she was back on her lyrics. He told a friend that he was thinking of disfiguring her with acid.
Neo continued to tell Soh how much she had hurt him and that she had to catch up with buying meals for him or going out with him.
On November 25, 2015, after postponing his request to watch a movie with him, he texted her and called her several times until she went the next night and bought dinner for him.
Soh went to Neo's apartment to bring a pack of food, but they began to quarrel along the common corridor. Neo's mother, Ng Lian Kee, came out of the apartment and told her to let her go.
But Neo grabbed Soh's cell phone and hid it inside the apartment. He also took a folding knife to his room, hid it behind his back and asked his mother if she knew how many men she had slept with.
Ng saw the knife and tried to fight it. But Neo pushed her mother to the ground and stabbed Soh once in the neck. Neo's made when the police arrived. Soh was pronounced dead three hours later at the hospital.
After Neo pleaded guilty last October, a hearing was held to resolve a dispute over a psychiatric opinion. The court found that Neo did not suffer from any mental disorder at the time of the stab wounds.
On Monday, Deputy Attorney General Wong Kok Weng asked for 15 years in prison, alleging that Neo wanted revenge on Soh because he felt hurt about not being able to own her exclusively.
But Neo's attorney, Tan Jun Yin, asked for a sentence of no more than 10 years, arguing that he had remorse from the moment he realized this. that he had done.
