A record number of aircraft, ships and military submarines are participating in this year's bilateral maritime exercise between the Singapore and Indian navies, the Defense Ministry announced yesterday.
On the occasion of its 25th anniversary and its silver jubilee, Singapore-India bilateral maritime exercise (Simbex) will bring together some thirty air, sea and submarine assets from the Navy of the Republic of Singapore (RSN) and the Indian Navy in the Bay of Bengal. and the Andaman Sea.
The exercise, which began yesterday and runs until November 21, will allow sailors from both navies to train together for live fire exercises and naval warfare exercises.
Senior naval officers from Singapore and India will also make official calls from the other side.
The armed forces of both countries have been conducting joint exercises and training for many years and several bilateral agreements have been signed.
The agreement with the army was last renewed in 2013, while the bilateral agreements between the Navy and the aviation were exchanged last year.
This year's Simbex will present anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare exercise scenarios, the scale and complexity of which has been increasing since the first 1994 Simbex, which focused on about the anti-submarine war, Mindef said.
It was during the 2003 exercise that the RSN became the first Southeast Asian Navy to successfully fire a torpedo against a moving submarine.
