Even if you weren’t sold on the look of the AirPods when they launched, they’ve certainly been an incredibly popular product. Many doubters found their reservations vaporize when they tried them for size, heard the great audio, experienced the superbly simple pairing and connection procedure, and enjoyed the features like strong audio quality in phone calls. Not to mention the convenience of being able to pause music playback just by taking one of the buds out of your ear.
The new version, AirPods 2, is rumored to have a more powerful chip to facilitate hands-free "Hey,Siri" interactions, improved, more recent version of Bluetooth and perhaps improved battery life as a result.

Now, Ice Universe, a pretty reliable leaker on Twitter, has insisted that the timetable is clear and things are about to fall into place. "Apple," he says, "wid definitely launch AirPods 2 this year."
Well, Ice Universe is certainly confident, so that’s a good start.
And in the last few hours, another leaker has joined the fray, even posting photographs he claims are of the new AirPods 2 and their case.

This latest tweet comes from the mysterious Mr white, who is not new to sharing such images on Twitter, as Zach Epstein at bgr.com reports.
But, before you run away with the idea that we now know everything about the new AirPods, the photos are revealing in different ways.

The first shot shows the cases. So what can we deduce? Well, the base of the case looks identical to current AirPods cases, so that means the slot at the base is a Lightning connector.
No surprise here, it’s just too convenient to charge your AirPods using the cable you use for your iPhone.

Take a look at the second photo and what’s interesting is what’s missing. When Apple announced the AirPower charging pad it promised a new case for AirPods which would be chargeable wirelessly. An LED would light on the case to show you when it was charging. The way up that the cases are lying should show this LED. It’s not visible here, perhaps because it’s so dainty it’s not spottable through the film covering, that it only shows up when the light is on.
Equally likely, it’s just not there.
So, doesn’t that mean these are pictures of current AirPods cases, not second-gen earbuds, after all?
Well, possibly, so we have to rely on the leaker’s reputation to think the image is genuine. And, let’s remember, Mr white hasn’t said these are AirPods 2. He posted without comment, though when later asked about prices, he replied, "They’re not available". Since we know the prices for current AirPods, Mr white is claiming this is an unreleased product.

But since AirPower isn’t here yet, it’s entirely possible that AirPods 2 could be launched in a case similar to what’s on sale now – so that could be what we’re looking at.
The rest of the photo shows some a bunch of Apple Watch (Series 3) units and two bags of individual AirPods, ones for left ears in the left bag, ones for right ears in the right bag. As far as I can tell, there’s no distinguishing feature on any of them that differs from current models.
That’s no surprise, either.
All those changes listed above are likely to leave the look of the new AirPods remarkably similar to the current buds.
Rumors are not proof – not even photographic leaks. But the sheer weight of numbers of these rumors makes it seem preposterous that we’ll have to wait much longer for AirPods 2. A release before December seems unlikely and, to be honest, I’d have bet against a release after that.
I respect Ice Universe, but my gut feeling tells me that January is more likely than December for the updated in-ear headphones.
For sure, they’ll only be announced when Apple can deliver the stock quickly – who’d buy version one when they knew the new, improved model was really, definitely, unquestionably on its way?
