SINGAPORE – A man who tried to escape from police after being questioned later turned out not to have gone to his camp for national service.
The Straits Times learned that police patrolled Saturday, November 19 at the Ang Mo Kio bus interchange at around 7 pm and spotted the young man behaving suspiciously.
He stated that he did not bring his identity card with him when the agents asked him to present it. Instead, the man provided his NRIC number.
When the officers examined him, it appeared that the man was a full time National Military (NSF) and therefore had to be in the camp.
After being questioned, the man, who would be 20 years old, ran away. The police pursued him and finally caught him.
The photos provided to the Chinese-language newspaper Shin Min Daily News show at least three police officers at the scene.
A photo appears to show that the officers, who would probably belong to the Transit Security Command, pin the man to the ground.
In September, in Parliament, it was reported that in the last five years, about 28 cases, or 14% of NSFs found guilty of absence without authorization, cited financial difficulties as the main reason for the 39; offense.
These figures suggest that, in total, there have been approximately 200 AWOL cases per year in the last five years.
Under the Singapore Armed Forces Act, persons found guilty of being excluded may be imprisoned for up to two years.
