According to the NHS, bed bugs are tiny bloodsucking insects that come out of their crevices at night to feed on blood.
They live in tiny cracks around the bedroom – usually in or around the bed frame.
Although bed bugs are not necessarily dangerous, they can be very annoying and let people react badly.
A bed covered with "rust spots" could be a harbinger of a bed bug infestation.
Bed bugs could cause rust on the bed, said the Terminix Pest Control Company.
Stains are not caused by rust at all. These are tiny patches of blood left by the feeding of insects.
They are usually near the edge or corners of the bed, Terminix said.
"The signs and symptoms of bed bugs can be difficult to detect early and even harder to treat," he said.
"In the uninformed eye, bedbug bites can be confused with those of other stinging insects.
"The first sign of a bedbug problem is obvious: the bed. Once bed bugs have been feeding on humans, they leave blood spots resembling small rust spots.
"These are usually near the corners and edges of the bed.
"Bed bugs have also lost their skin, or moulted, many times during their maturation, so you can find their oval brown exoskeletons during your search."
In addition to blood stains, you may notice an unpleasant smell in the room, he added.
Bed bugs release a pheromone that can be quite invasive in large numbers.
Terminix warned that the room might smell like a well-used locker room.
If you get stung by a bed bug, it can take up to two weeks before the bites begin to itch.
But the more you are bitten, the longer it takes for the marks to appear on the skin, he added.
If you find that you have a bedbug infestation, be sure to clean all bedding, curtains and clothes with warm water and dry them at the highest temperature.
Vacuum the bed and the surroundings. After finishing, empty the contents of the vacuum cleaner into a plastic bag and take it directly to the trash.
If your mattress is infested, it's probably a good idea to get rid of it and buy a new one.
