BMW has completed the first use of a modified M4 DTM to comply with the Class 1 regulations that will come into effect in the DTM next season.

Bruno Spengler scored the first kilometers of the car during a race at the BMW Group Dingolfing factory, which marked the first release of the new two-liter turbo engine that will propel the car from 2019.

"BMW Turbo Power has been successful in motorsport for almost 50 years," said Jens Marquardt, director of BMW Motorsport. "In the first year with a BMW turbo engine in 1969, Dieter Quester was immediately crowned European champion of passenger cars with the BMW 2002 TI. In 1973, the BMW 2002 turbo became the first German series car to be equipped with a turbocharger. We now add a new chapter to this story in the DTM.

"Our first kilometers of Class 1 went very positively. We are satisfied with all functional tests. The new turbo looks great. However, its most impressive efficiency is its asset, although it is considerably more powerful than its predecessor. "

Spengler added that initial impressions about the engine were positive, with the first proper laps for the car expected to be tested in Estoril next month.

"After my first few kilometers with the new DTM engine, I can not wait to see next season," he said. "I can imagine how fun it will be to take the track with so many BMW Turbo Power. You can feel the extra power. We will organize even more show for the fans in 2019.

"The full-throttle time is reduced, but the top speed is higher than before. We will have to work even harder while driving. "
