"In some diesel vehicles, the glycol coolant can leak" from a faulty component called recirculating exhaust gas cooler, which can combine with other substances in the system to create a risk of fire, said the group.
BMW said it was contacting sellers who would in turn contact the owners of the vehicles involved to arrange a checkup.
"The exhaust gas recirculation module will be checked and, in the event of an anomaly, the parts will be exchanged," the group said.
In August, BMW announced the recall of more than 480,000 vehicles affected by the same problem in Europe and some Asian countries and apologized to South Korea after some thirty cars caught fire this year. .
On Tuesday, he had checked more diesel models and identified a "minimal risk" of fire in some of them.
The latest recall brings to 1.6 million the total number of cars affected in the world.
BMW shares traded 1.4% to trade at € 73.38 ($ 11.10) in Frankfurt at 11:45 am (09:45 GMT), while the DAX German prime index fell 2.1 %.
