Chinese Public Criticizes Police For Closing Child Molestation Case, Despite Video : China : Business Times

The Chinese public cannot believe the police refuses to pursue a father who had allegedly abused a child on the train. This, in spite of incriminating video footage of the said abuse. 

Police dropped an investigation of a case involving a father said to have molested his daughter on a train. The girl, just five-year-old, is reportedly losing her chance to derive justice because her molester is her father. The case has strong evidence too because there exists a video circulating online of the incident.

Last week, a video circulated all over the web, showing a man repeatedly fondling a young girl. The young girl called him her father, depicting their relationship and could also be seen asking him to stop what he was doing. The footage was taken from a train in Jiangxi province. Naturally, the incident does not sit well with the general public, many of whom took to social media to air their anger, causing the authorities to investigate.

The authorities acted quickly because, on Wednesday, the Nanchang railway police announced that they already have an identity of the perpetrator. The man in the video is reportedly a 30-years-old with the surname Zhou. However, instead of apprehending the man, the police claimed that the public has no cause of concern since the man and the said victim has a father-daughter relationship. “Zhou’s behavior shown in the video does not constitute molesting. We sincerely thank citizens for their concern,” the police statement read.

This caused a public outcry, given what they had seen on the video. The video showed the girl sitting on his lap while the man was touching her under her clothes, which cannot be considered normal and not sexual. 
This case is reportedly evidence of how much more should improve with Chinese domestic abuse laws, something that Chinese experts themselves have claimed for years. 

“There are relevant laws about child sexual abuse, but in terms of prevention and protection of children, there is not enough clear regulation,” Feng Yuan commented, an expert on domestic abuse in China.

There had been cases when abusers have been punished in the past. For example, just days ago, a woman has been sentenced for 16 years for abusing her stepson. The perpetrator reportedly beat and berated the kid, only 6, leaving him with severe physical injuries and mental trauma.
