I wear my love for Alan Wake on my sleeve. It was Alan – and an ocean, not a lake – who made me get up and take note of Remedy Entertainment. Max Payne be damned, the supernatural world of Alan Wake m drew me immediately and made me think of the game when I was not playing it. He is responsible for my exploration of Twin Peaks (and subsequent dedication) . Over the last eight years, Alan Wake has literally helped to define who I am.

Considering Alan Wake one of the best games of all time is, unfortunately, a recipe for grief. Alan's story is still not resolved. While Alan Wake's American Nightmare, a reduced arcade Xbox 360 game, served as a low wake, Alan remains in the ether with Barbara Jagger. For eight long years, I have wanted a sequel appropriate to Remedy's best work, and with every new project announcement, I tend to be too excited and hopeful. Project P7 was no different

Deep in my heart, I knew that P7 was not going to be Alan Wake 2 . As Quantum Break before, I knew that I would eventually be disappointed because Remedy would not continue Alan's story – at least not directly. But at the very least, I knew that, whatever the project, it would be solid.

If I were to succinctly describe Control after a recent non-intervention experiment, these are the elements supernatural Alan Wake crossed with the modernized shooter of Quantum Break . In short, the things that Remedy Entertainment does really well.

In Control you play Jesse Faden, a woman who traveled to New York in search of the Federal Bureau of Control. Faden looks for answers after a flash with the supernatural, and she believes the FBC can provide them. Upon arrival, the Bureau's headquarters, known as the oldest house, is attacked by a violent supernatural force known as The Hiss. It is a ruthless entity, owning Office employees and killing its manager quickly and efficiently.

Faden soon finds herself the new director of the control office after picking up the weapon of her predecessor, herself an object of power . The weapon can only have one owner at a time; In picking it up, Faden unconsciously assured herself that it was her. It's a bittersweet appointment – the gun can turn into different configurations and only works for Faden, giving him many supernatural powers. On the other hand, she also makes her the main enemy of The Hiss.

Jesse is also new to the strange world of Control that we are, unleashed on the Old House and its open world (first for Remedy). The Oldest House is more than a mere office building – it's a hub for the paranormal ; together, you are progressing in an attempt to understand what all this means. On the surface, this is a traditional office building … until you look up and you see dozens of office workers hovering on the ceiling near most of the rooms. A bit like the Caught in Alan Wake some employees walk into the shadowed office, ready to hit and hurt.

I burst out laughing as Jesse approached an area just off the lobby of the office. . "Zone of ritual attenuation", a nearby panel read. "The law of the three applies." The oldest House has a Metroidvania design; we reached an area that seemed unattainable, a separate gateway to Jesse by a wide gulf. We were told that Jesse would normally need to backtrack through the office to find another object or power – this time, giving levitation – in order to cross the gap. Fortunately, to help with the demo, Jesse already had it.

We had access to another reality, both corporate and demonic. The clean, white, and organized constructions of the Bureau seemed out of place in the mystical domain. Winged creatures flew overhead, adding only to that feeling. As Jesse emerged from an elevator, she found herself in a long hallway full articles cataloged by the Bureau. Here, a man was sitting in a closed room, a wall of glass allowing you to look inside. He begged Jesse to relieve him. he had been forced to keep his eyes on a fridge for days, otherwise he would have "deviated" (we were told that it was a secondary mission with which Jesse could later take care ). Curious and curious.

The supernatural powers of Faden could be inspired by Alan Wake but function more like the temporal powers of Quantum Break . They are essential for survival. I watched Jesse shoot debris in front of her to act as a shield before throwing it on nearby opponents to knock them out. Hell, perhaps the success of multi-platform control will convince Microsoft (or even 505 Games) to let Remedy continue its previous work. I can hope.
