Cottonseed Oil May Help Control Your Bad Cholesterol

Cottonseed oil may help control your bad cholesterol, according to some researchers. High levels of cholesterol can cause negative effects on your body and even raise an individual’s risk of serious cardiovascular events like stroke or heart attack. Now, several researchers show that ingesting a particular type of oil may reduce this negative effect.

There are two types of cholesterol including high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol which is also called as “good” cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which also known as “bad” cholesterol.

Health experts describe low-density lipoprotein as “bad” because the high levels of this fatty substance can increase a person’s risk of stroke and heart attack.

Now, researchers from the University of Georgia in Athens suggests that consuming a high-fat diet with cottonseed oil can lower a person’s LDL cholesterol levels. Their findings now appear in the journal Nutrition Research.

For the study, the researchers added healthy 15 male participants aged 18–45 and asked them to eat one of two versions of a high-fat diet. In the first version, the team used olive oil and cottonseed oil in another. The participants followed the diet for a period of 5 days.

As a result, the researchers found ‘ower LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels in participants who had followed the cottonseed oil-enriched diet. They suggest that cottonseed oil may help control your bad cholesterol.

“One of the reasons these results were so surprising is because of the magnitude of change observed with the cottonseed oil diet,” explains study author Jamie Cooper, an associate professor at the University of Georgia. “To see this amount of change in such a short period of time is exciting,” she added.
