Dundee advanced to the Betfred Cup Round of 32 with a comfortable win over Brechin, a 10-man team at Dens Park.
Neil McCann's men made sure of their place in the table thanks to goals from Lewis Spence and Paul McGowan in both goals to make three wins out of four in Group D.
This means that the Dark Blues can at least approach the opening of the Ladbrokes Premiership next weekend at the newly promoted St Mirren with real optimism while they aim to reach the pitch.
For Darren Dods' Brechin League 1, they were spared another embarrassing situation, having dropped 7-1 to Dunfermline home a few days earlier, although Callum Tapping was sent off for an injury to Cammy. Kerr, having already been laundered.
Dundee took a positive start and after just 10 minutes, Spence midfielder put them forward with a magnificent goal.
The 22-year-old's efforts took surprise goaltender Conor Brennan as he was sailing high in his head and in the top corner.
Brechin's part time does not just roll, and halfway through the first half, they threaten to equalize when Sean Burns passes from the left, but Dene Shields fails to catch up. 39; equalize.
However, Dundee was still on the front foot and increased his lead after 59 minutes.
This time McGowan threw on a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area and his low blow was too much for Brennan to hold out.
McCann's men had other opportunities before Tapping received his walk orders, but would be pleased to have made the next steps in the competition.
