THE HAGUE: Dutch doctors and scientists have interrupted a groundbreaking study on the use of Viagra to help pregnant women whose babies did not develop properly in the womb after the death of 11 infants

. research with 10 other hospitals in the Netherlands, announced that the study had been stopped after the death of babies, and after others have developed a lung disease being born prematurely.

Viagra, which is the best-known name for the generic drug sildenafil, is most commonly used for men with erectile problems.

But doctors believe that its properties in dilating blood vessels could promote a better flow of blood into the placenta and "stimulate the growth of the unborn child." Development has been delayed in the womb of the mother, said the hospital in a statement.

The study involving the UMC and 10 other Dutch hospitals was launched in 2015 focusing on "The prognosis for these babies is bad and there is no other known treatment for the child, "says the Amsterdam Hospital
