Liverpool weigh up Dembele transfer

Liverpool have been linked with Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele. Dembele has had problems with discipline at the Spanish club since moving for around £130 million from Borussia Dortmund two seasons ago, but his agent claims the 21 year old wants to stay at the club. However, Jurgen Klopp is preparing a bid of £85m to see if he can prise him away, and add to his squad while they chase Manchester City.

Paper Round’s view: Dembele is one of the most talented young players in world football, and in many senses, should be bought by any club that can afford him. However, Dembele’s reputation is one of an inconsistent team player, for all his goals. Spending £85m would not be a risk just on those grounds, but that level of expenditure could probably be used to bring greater improvement to the defence.

Mourinho to offload two defenders in search of replacement

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been linked with the sale of two of his central defenders. Marcos Rojo, who recently signed a new deal, and Eric Bailly, Mourinho’s first signing at the club, are not wanted by Mourinho. It depends if the club will allow him to sell either player, but his target is to raise funds to bring in either Spurs’ Toby Alderweireld or Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar.

Paper Round’s view: United’s central defence is perhaps the club’s weakest link, and netiher Rojo nor Bailly have done enough to remain at the club, and certainly not enough to feature regularly. The club and Ed Woodward have a decision to make – to back Mourinho in the transfer window this winter in order to secure Champions League football and revenue next season, or to continue to flounder outside the top four.

Spurs eye Barella

Mousa Dembele’s ankle injury led the club to send him to Qatar in search of the best treatment, but they are lining up a January transfer to cover for his absence. They have identified Nicolo Barella, the Cagliari midfielder, as a £35 million box-to-box player. The 21 year old has been called the next Steven Gerrard by some, and his current club are willing to listen to offers for him in January.

Paper Round’s view: Young Italian players have generally struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League, but Barella has the talent to become one of the exceptions. Dembele’s absence means that Spurs’ squad is stretched to its limits with the demands of European and domestic football, and signing a player like Barella could take the strain off the players currently in midfield.

Sanchez could force January exit

Manchester United striker Alexis Sanchez is so frustrated with life at Old Trafford he may attempt to force his way out in January. Sanchez has struggled for time on the pitch under Mourinho, one of the key reasons he plumped for the club over rivals Manchester City. However, he faces a problem over an early departure, as his wages of £400,000 a week put him out of the reach of most players. Paris Saint-Germain are one option, but they may not move until the summer.

Paper Round’s view: Sanchez should focus first on rediscovering his form. If he really wants to leave United, then he can convince other teams to splash the cash by impressing on the pitch. PSG would make sense should Neymar move back to Spain, and perhaps Juventus could be an option should Cristiano Ronaldo become more of a liability than an asset. For now, he seems stuck in Manchester.
