His age was determined by the metal content.

Astronomers from Monash University in Australia have discovered in the Milky Way the old star, whose age reaches a record of 13.5 billion years. This object appeared about 300 million years after the Big Bang.

This writes the Chronicle.info with reference to rambler.ru.

According to scientists, 2MASS J18082002-5104378 B could be one of the oldest stars in the Universe. Its age was determined by the concentration of metals that are almost absent. Metals and other elements heavier than hydrogen were thrown into the interstellar medium with the death of the first stars and, with each new generation, the metallicity of the stars increased. It is estimated that the metal concentration in 2MASS J18082002-5104378 B is about 10 times lower than that of the Earth.

The presence of such stars in the Milky Way indicates that the galaxy is more than 3 to 5 billion years older than previously thought. Moreover, its mass represents only 10% of the mass of the Sun, which constitutes the lower limit of the combustion of hydrogen.

According to scientists, this means that the very first stars of the universe were probably not supermassive and were formed of small amounts of material. This small size allows it to live at least tens of billions of years.
