STOCKHOLM (AFP) – Dozens of French firefighters arrived in Sweden on Monday (July 23rd) to attack the flames raging in the country during an extreme heat wave

The 30 French soldiers from a civilian defense unit landed shortly after midnight Monday at 2200 GMT (Sunday) in Stockholm, said an AFP correspondent. They will be joined Monday by 30 other firefighters from the south of France

France has already sent two Canadair planes to Sweden after the authorities asked the EU emergency aid for fight fires that caused no deaths. Italy sent two firefighting planes and Norway sent eight helicopters. Germany and Poland also responded to the request for assistance

Record temperatures above 33 degrees Celsius were recorded in Uppsala, a city north of Stockholm

There has been virtually no rain since the beginning of May. Denmark, southern Norway and northern Finland are also experiencing a period of extreme heat which, according to weather forecasts, is not expected to end soon.
