Finally, the all-new BMW 8 Series G14 Cabriolet G14 was finally unveiled. This is the second model to join the 8 Series before the next arrival of the Gran Coupé. Two variants are available at launch: the M850i xDrive and the 840d xDrive.
The imprint of the cabriolet is almost identical to that of his brother coupe, measuring 4,843 mm long, 1,902 mm wide, 1,339 mm high and having a wheelbase of 2822 mm. From a design point of view, it's pretty much the same, with the exception of the electric soft-top. The foldable roof is composed of several layers of fabric offering excellent sound insulation (in BMW's own words) and designed to minimize wind noise cruising.
When it's open, the soft top is stowed behind the rear seats, concealed beneath the two subtle domes for a classic 'double bubble' sports car look. It takes 15 seconds to open and close completely (usable up to 50 km / h), using a button located in the center console. A black top comes standard, while Anthracite Silver is optional.
At the rear three-quarter, we can say that the trailing edge seems higher, but it is deliberate so as to give the convertible a uniform and flat appearance. An integrated wind deflector and optional neck protectors (just like the Mercedes-Benz Air Scarf) deliver warm air through the vents in the front seat head restraints.
It also features new cross struts and a new underbody shear panel. Two aluminum bars behind the rear seat head restraints provide rollover protection. The last change is the third brake light (LED) integrated in the trunk.
Elsewhere, this is really the 8 series that we know. However, as with all versions with folding roof, the convertible gains a little weight compared to the coupe, tilting the scale to just over 2,000 kg (about 100 kg more).
That means a little slower in the sprint of the century: the M850i with the 4.4-liter V8 bi-turbo (530 hp, 750 Nm) arrives in 3.9 seconds, two tenths of a second less than the equivalent coupe. The 3.0-liter, 3.0-liter turbodiesel six-cylinder developing 320 hp and 680 Nm runs from zero to 100 km / h in 5.2 seconds, or three times less than a second. Both variants feature BMW's renowned xDrive all-wheel drive system and the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.
The Convertible Series 8 Convertible is standard equipped with the Adaptive M suspension: the front axle boasts a double-wishbone configuration, while the rear is sorted according to a five-armed architecture. The damping levels vary depending on the current driving mode, and an active steering with servotronic speed-sensitive system works in tandem with the steering of the rear axle.
A more advanced Adaptive M Professional suspension can be specified for owners of the M850i xDrive, and includes Active Roller Stabilization feature that uses swivel electric motors on the front and rear axles to enhance handling and agility .
On the outside, the flip-top car is fitted with LED headlights with LED DRL as standard, while BMW Laserlight can be rented for a small fee. The M850i xDrive has a sportier look with bumpers and alloy wheels specific to M.
The 840d xDrive has a more understated look – even though it's dressed in the M Sport kit – with a pearlescent chrome finish for the Air Breathers, a matte aluminum grille, chrome exhaust tips and a dark shaded rear diffuser. . The BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line can be ordered separately. It features black chrome accents and a shiny black aluminum grille.
There are seven choices of paint colors, although metallic carbon black and metallic Barcelona blue are reserved for the M850i xDrive variant. Those who have a penchant for personalization can opt for more unique colors thanks to BMW Individual, which includes the matte finish Frozen Bluestone Metallic.
Inside, everything that was cut was postponed. The list of kits includes the new three-spoke leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, the digital display of the 12.3-inch professional BMW Live Cockpit instruments, the 10.25-inch widescreen infotainment system with control gestures and the new BMW 7.0 operating system.
Further down you will find a new active haptic feedback function group containing the start button, the iDrive controller and the driving mode switches. The electronic gear lever always has an ornamental look, with an opaque glass crystal in the center with an illuminated "8" symbol. Switches that accompany it can also be treated with a glass finish.
The seats are upholstered in vernasca leather as standard, but BMW Individual merino leather – available in black, cognac or ivory white – is also available. The darker versions of the leather seats feature sun-reflecting technology, which reduces surface warming caused by the sun.
In practical terms, the 8 Series Convertible offers a 350-liter boot space with the hood up, and the rear seats are split 50:50 and can be operated by manual levers in the trunk. The tailgate is powered, but the Comfort Access hands free mode is optional.
To top it off, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon Surround sound system is included as standard. If that does not suit you, the 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Surround Sound System features a 13-channel, 13-amp, 16-channel amplifier and 12 partially illuminated, stainless steel surround speakers.
Security is not lacking either. Driver Assistant adds lane departure alert, lane departure warning, collision warning with pedestrian alert, city braking, rear cross traffic alert and collision alert back as standard. There is also the recognition of road signs and the head-up display.
The Driving Assistant Professional offers even more – Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function (works up to 210 km / h), Lane Keeping Assistant with active crash protection, Extended Cross Traffic Alert with Priority and Distress Alert. Of course, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian and animal detection can also be used.
The parking assistant is available as an option and now includes the reversing assistant which traces the last parking maneuver completed. The Parking Assistant Plus package includes a 360-degree monitor with a three-dimensional rendering, as well as a 3D remote view function for smartphones.
The usual features of BMW Connected are offered in addition to the open mobility cloud, allowing access to the car's features from digital devices such as iPhone and Apple Watch, Android smartphones and smartwatches, Amazon Alexa and Google Home. There is also an NFC-enabled digital key (launched with some Samsung smartphones), remote software upgrade as well as Microsoft Office 365 with Skype for Business.
