The question of meritocracy has recently been discussed in developed countries. In Singapore, this has sparked introspection as the country prides itself on being a meritocratic society where people can do well regardless of their family background or social connections.
Meritocracy was a hot topic in Parliament this week. Ong Ye Kung acknowledging that meritocracy "runs the risk of becoming a dirty word", because those who benefited from an open system would then invest educational and social resources to increase the chances of success of their children in the system [19659003].
