The Florida Department of Health has confirmed a human case of West Nile virus in Clay County.
This news comes after several reports on human cases reported in the counties of Duval, Nassau and Putnam. At present, Duval County has the highest number of cases (8).
Clay's health department advised the public to "empty and cover" to protect themselves from mosquito-borne diseases.
According to the Department of Health, residents should drain stagnant water to prevent mosquitoes from multiplying. This includes:
- Draining water from garbage cans, domestic gutters, buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys, flowerpots or any other container in which rainwater or sprinklers can accumulate
- Discard old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances and other unused items
- Empty and clean bird baths and pet bowls at least once or twice a week
- Protect boats and vehicles from rain with tarps that will not accumulate water
Residents must also cover themselves by:
- Wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves, especially for people working in areas where mosquitoes are present
- Apply insect repellent to bare skin and clothing
- Use mosquito nets to protect children under two months
According to the Ministry of Health, doors and windows should also be covered with mosquito nets to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
