Q Were you considered the highest candidate in the 1976 general election and as one of the potential new ministers?

A I would not say. At that time, no one expected you to be anybody. The estate was not yet fully displayed or evoked. How did you know that others would not be great travelers? No one has speculated that you would be a charge holder and there was no need to speculate as the former ministers were still quite young. It was too early to say. Toh Chin Chye, Ong Pang Boon, Chua Sian Chin, Jek Yeun Thong, S. Rajaratnam, E.W. Barker were present. They were in their late forties, at most in their fifties. I was 35 years old.
