Márquez and Iannone took the top two positions for the majority of the German Grand Prix sessions on Friday morning, with the Honda rider taking three tenths to start.

But Marquez, who has won every year at Sachsenring since he was in 125cc in 2010, has not improved his time by 1m21.832s.

Iannone first reduced the gap to less than a tenth, then outscored Marquez, beating it by 0.390s with a 1m21.442s.

Valentino Rossi was the best of the others thanks to a last-minute improvement, more than a half-second pace. He demoted his Yamaha teammate Maverick Vinales, who finished fourth.

Andrea Dovizioso was the best Ducati rider in fifth position, closely followed by Danilo Petrucci and Jack Miller, of the Pramac team – who beat second seed Jorge Lorenzo by 0.007s.

Aprilia's Scott Redding was still 0.031s in the ninth with Johann Zarco completing the top 10.

Alex Rins was 12th behind Takaaki Nakagami, with Rins one of three riders to crash into the session.

The Suzuki rider fell into the winding section at the start of the lap, while Alvaro Bautista crashed at the first corner as he passed his teammate Angelica Ducati Nieto, Karel Abraham. The Avintia Ducati Tito Rabat is crushed on the fast right-hander following the long sequence of lefts.

After dominating media day Thursday with his retirement announcement, Dani Pedrosa was only 14th.

It was five places better than schoolboy Honda Cal Crutchlow, who was two positions behind the best KTM driver Bradley Smith in the 19th.

Franco Morbidelli, who came back after jumping a hand injury at Assen, was 22nd, with the KTM wildcard Mika Kallio taking 24th place.
