Apple thinks there are enough people willing to buy a "last iPhone" and want to compromise on some features to get them at a lower price. And the price of the new XR is also one of the biggest dilemmas that you will face as a potential buyer. We will discuss this further in our conclusion, but first, more on the XR.
The third new iPhone
The "R" really does not represent anything, but the X (ten) in the name tells you that it's an evolution of the iPhone X from last year . We are now firmly in the territory of choice and have made a permanent goodbye at home. Touch and Touch ID (fingerprint scanner). With XR, you get the latest Apple A12X Bionic chip, a superior glass and metal sandwich design, a 6.1-inch LCD display, wireless charging, face recognition and a single main camera.
iPhone XR vs. XS & XS Max
There are cuts for sure. We think the most obvious differences are the screen and the camera. In order to get the lowest possible price, Apple opted for the LCD instead of OLED. This change also means that 3D Touch is missing. The main camera is a unique unit that uses auto learning and AI to give you the portrait mode. Since there is no secondary rear camera, you only have three portrait lighting effects (natural, studio, outline). There is then a difference between the materials used: the frame of the XS is shiny, made of stainless steel and of superior quality, while that of the XR is made of aluminum. Finally, there are more subtle differences: XR is rated IP67 instead of IP68 and XR has 3 GB of RAM while XS has 4 GB (although Apple does not officially mention RAM).
Liquid Retina vs OLED
This is going to be the subject of a popular debate, so we thought it was better to put forward our point of view. First of all, OLED is definitely better than Liquid Retina (Apple's name for its highly optimized color correction LCD). Put XR side by side with XS and you'll notice that the XS / XS Max's glasses are thinner and have darker blacks and brighter colors. The XR display is 1792 x 828 pixels, which is clearly running out of Full HD (you could call it 828p). However, for an LCD, this display is phenomenal. The caches have the same thickness all around (which is very unusual for an LCD). It offers a true tone (to automatically adjust the color temperature to your environment), a 120hz touch detection (a softer response), a high contrast ratio, a wide range of P3 colors and a very high brightness (625nits) . In short, the display is superb.
Other highlights
One would think that the only camera in the XR is a step forward, but it actually corresponds to the XS for the most part. In terms of quality, sharpness, color, low light and dynamic range, the XR delivers fantastic results. Then you can get fun colors. In particular, yellow, coral, blue and red are amazing because the aluminum frame matches the colors of the back glass. The performances of the A12X are hallucinating. It also means you get an unforgettable experience with Augmented Reality (AR) applications, seamless 4K 60fps video, fast video editing and a great gaming experience. The stereo speakers can be very loud and separate the left channels well. It can also record the sound in stereo. Since Face ID and front camera are exactly the same as the XS, you get the fun features of Animoji and Memoji. Finally, the life of the battery is a good surprise: it lasts much longer than even the largest XS Max and many other flagship products such as Note 9 and Pixel 3.
Where is the XR
If you carry a magnifying glass on the screen, you will be able to distinguish individual pixels. The main problem is not that these pixels are visible, but that they are visible in a phone that costs as much. Phones that cost as little as Rs 10k have 1080p screens, so having a lower resolution in a flagship phone is a disappointment. Portrait mode does not work on objects (it is only suitable for human subjects). If you switch to portrait mode and point it to something, it just gives you a "No Detected Person" message. Plus, you'll lose things that only a dual camera system can do, such as 2x optical telephoto and 3D photos on Facebook.
And to conclude
The XR is probably all the iPhone that most people need. It has a great camera, better battery life than even the XS Max, better performance than most other phones. But the starting price of Rs 77k is a dilemma. The iPhone X of last year can be at your expense for less than 70 000 rupees (taking into account offers and cash back). It always offers more performance than you would need, a great dual camera system, a smaller size, a more sophisticated build, a face ID, an OLED screen and a 3D touch. You can not go wrong with that. The latest Google pixels (Pixel 3 (71k) and 3XL (83k €) have better cameras.) Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (Rs 68k) offers a more premium feel, a beautiful OLED screen and more features. having an iPhone with the latest features without spending as much as the XS / XS Max, the XR is surprisingly good.
