Next year, the public will be able to enter the Istana compound for the first time, at night, during an open day, as part of the 150th anniversary of the presidential residence. .

The open doors of Istana will be held on October 6 – a Sunday – almost until the day the Heritage Site was first opened on October 8, 1869.

President Halimah Yacob has announced this initiative, as well as other commemorative events, in the margins of the largest number of participants in the Openavali Istana Open Houses, since the collection of these data in 2011. The event attracted 17,000 visitors yesterday.

"I really hope that Singaporeans will come to be able to experience Istana at night," Ms. Halimah said.

"Istana 150 will be a useful opportunity for us to reflect on our history as a nation and the values that have guided us to this point.

"Istana has traveled with Singaporeans for the last 150 years, becoming a key part of our collective memory and identity.

"It is important that we consider this commemoration as an opportunity to deepen our heritage as a unique people, because the way we have arrived at what we are today will determine who we will be tomorrow."

The 150th anniversary celebrations will include an exhibition presenting the history and heritage of Istana. The exhibition will cross Singapore to the heart of cities and libraries.

Multimedia tours of Istana's premises will also be produced for the first time to provide Singaporeans with direct experience of Istana's land exploration.

A series of new books on the history, architecture and fauna and flora of the Istana lands will be launched, as well as a series of memories for the commemoration.

The Istana 150 logo was unveiled at a ceremony held during the Deepavali Istana Open House.

It was designed by Charlie Chua, a student of the 18-year-old School of the Arts in Singapore, whose idea has surpassed that of more than 100 others submitted in the Istana 150 Logo contest. The design, which will appear on the Istana 150 souvenirs, shows a white outline of the building against an intense red background.

Mr Chua said the logo was inspired by his visit to the Istana site at the age of three. He remembered playing in the garden and seeing the building's facade under the morning sun.

"With the 150th anniversary celebrations, what better way to contribute to the occasion than to design a logo, especially since I have fond memories of Istana as a child," he added.

Visitors to the Deepavali Istana Open House were able to attend musical performances by bands such as the CHIJ (Toa Payoh) High School Concert Band and the Sampada Dance Studio. They also enjoyed the nature walks and guided tours of the Istana building.

The crowd stayed until 5:45 pm, just before the end of the open house.
