SINGAPORE – The six autonomous Universities of Singapore will participate this year for the first time in the WorldSkills Singapore (WSS) competition alongside students of the Institute of Technical and Polytechnic Education, as part of from an extension of the competition.
The number of skill areas that participants will participate in during the six-day biennial competition will also be increased from nine to 26.
These changes were announced by Ong Ye Education Minister Kung at the launch of the 13th edition of the contest. WorldSkills Singapore, the largest event in this year's history, will bring together nearly 250 finalists who will compete in 26 skill areas, including new categories such as e-publishing.
This year's theme is "Our Skills, Our Future" and involves 150 more participants than the 2016 edition.
The new areas, such as the technology of the apid transit systems have been added after being identified as emerging and sought after skills essential to Singapore's future economy.
"We have moved ITE competition to where we are today at the Singapore Convention and Exhibition Center." Mr. Ong cited Singapore's 35 gold medals at the WorldSkills International Competition as proof of the level of skill and dedication of Singapore's youth.
"When I was at the WorldSkills Competition in Abu Dhabi last year, our competitors told me how they had spent nine months preparing for the competition, practicing almost six to eight hours almost every day."
WorldSkills's new Singapore Ambassador program to recognize former competitors who have pursued excellence in their fields.
Among them is Amalina Zakaria, owner of an online boutique design agency, who won the 2008 WSS gold medal in web design and a medallion of excellence in the contest International WorldSkills 2009; and Catherine Boey, a former ITE student who won gold at the 2013 WorldSkills beauty therapy contest and is currently a speaker at her alma mater.

There will also be more than 30 free workshops in five industrial clusters for adults on Saturdays, including the mobile phone photography, sushi making, artistic creation and creation of digital animation.

The winners of the WSS 2018 could be chosen to represent Singapore at the Asean Skills Competition in Bangkok next month, and at the WorldSkills International Competition in Kazan, Russia, next August.
The winners of the gold, silver and bronze medals will also win $ 3,000, $ 2,000 and $ 1,000 each.
