KUCHING: Malaysia has the highest rate of diabetes in Asia and one of the highest in the world, probably next to Saudi Arabia, said the executive chairman of the 39, National Institute of Diabetes (NADI), Datuk Dr. Mustafa Embong. He said that there are about 2.5 million diabetic adults in Malaysia, aged 18 and over.

"According to NADI records, statistics suggest that nearly half of Malays do not know that they have diabetes.Time, type 2 diabetes does not show any symptoms until if you develop a heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, become blind or have amputations, "he said

Therefore, Dr. Mustaffa stated that diabetes is a medical condition called "silent killer."

"With this conference … new treatments for people with diabetes will be introduced to meet the needs of the world. In total, 11 diabetologists from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Europe and Asia will present topics to the conference. About 200 participants including doctors attend the two-day conference. – Bernama
