With about a quarter of Singaporeans aged 65 and over in 2030, the provision of appropriate health care to an aging population is an urgent concern for health care authorities.
The fourth episode of the Smart City Web series will showcase different solutions created to improve healthcare in Singapore.
For example, robotic arms located in hospital pharmacies serve to counter the lack of manpower in hospitals. They are armed with intelligent software systems that allow them to securely and efficiently select and package heavy loads of drugs.
Not only will they reduce patients' waiting time by half, but they will also help pharmacists be more productive and do more front-line work.
To involve and motivate seniors in the exercises, a humanoid robot called Robocoach was created by students of Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) to educate seniors about fitness.
The robot was sent to five higher activity centers. Since then, it has become a hit with the elderly, with activity centers for seniors signaling an increase in their participation with the presence of new robots in the centers.
A new version of the robot called Telebot is under development. The NP team plans to deploy Telebot to seniors to improve their social and physical well-being.
To enable older people to age at home with a sensor fireplace, Singapore Management University (SMU) is developing an initiative called SHINESeniors. The initiative will allow the team to install discreet sensors around seniors' homes to monitor their daily lifestyle.
If a deviation, such as a faint or a fall, from normal activities is detected, caregivers will be quickly activated to provide personalized care.
SHINESeniors benefited more than 100 seniors. SMU is studying the commercial opportunity with the goal of reaching more seniors in the near future.
