This is the GP Mini John Cooper Works concept, a forerunner of the production version of the extremely hot Mini hatchery currently on display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
First-and second-generation minis have offered a JCW Works GP model near the end of the life cycle of traditional models, in 2006 and 2012 respectively, and the same model should follow with this third-generation car. The concept was first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year.
The next mini hatchback is due in 2020, so we expect to see this quick release in 2019.
However, Mini said that it could "not confirm whether mass production model of the GP will be launched in the future.This concept is a design study. "
The BMW automaker stated that the concept is inspired by his victories at the Monte Carlo Rally 50 years ago" embodying the dynamic style and the ultimate driving pleasure ".
Peter Schwarzenbauer has already told Autocar that a GP model was likely to reappear. "The John Cooper Works GP is an important part of the Mini brand," he said. "It worked well for us in the past and I do not see why it will not happen again in the future."
The concept presents an extreme style that is unlikely to be carried forward in its entirety to a production model. There are large front and back aprons, side skirts and a prominent roof spoiler. It also uses lightweight materials, including carbon fiber, which, according to Mini, optimizes the power-to-weight ratio. However, no figures are provided.
It uses 19-inch alloy wheels, while the LED taillights display half of the Union Jack, a nod to the British origins of the car. A version of these lights is now available on the Mini hatchback.
Inside, the concept has a roll cage and a pair of low mount bucket seats. The latest JCW GP, launched in 2012, uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 215 hp, an increase of 7 hp from the standard JCW of the time. It hit 0-62mph in 6.3sec and cost £ 28,790.
The current JCW standard has adopted a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol with 227bhp and also hits 0-62mph in 6.3sec so expect improvements in power and speed for the third-generation JCW GP
