SINGAPORE – More than 5.8 kg of matching drugs valued at approximately $ 256,000 were seized Monday afternoon (Oct. 29) at Woodlands Checkpoint.
A total of 2.95 kg of cannabis, also known as marijuana, 2.38 kg of heroin and 546 g of "ice" or methamphetamine were found on a car registered in Malaysia.
In a joint press release with the Central Narcotics Board (CNB), the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said that its agents ordered the car to carry out additional checks around 15:55 Monday.
During the search, they found several black parcels in the rear compartment of the vehicle. CNB officers were then alerted. Further research on the car carried out by both agencies revealed the seized substances.
The drugs were packaged and concealed in different parts of the car, including the air conditioning vents, the upholstery and the rear seatbacks.
The driver of the car, a 37-year-old Malaysian, was arrested for importing controlled drugs. The investigations are in progress.
The assortment of seized drugs is enough to feed the addiction of 1,866 abusers for a week.
ICA and CNB said: "Our borders are our first line of defense for Singapore's security, and the internal team team agencies will continue to screen passengers and vehicles at checkpoints to prevent any attempt to smuggling of people, drugs, weapons, other contraband. "
