On June 28, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers seized a total of 7,484 unpaid cigarette cartons from two trucks registered in Malaysia.
At approximately 2:00 am that day, officers directed a cargo truck ship for checks at the arrival area of the Tuas checkpoint.
During the checks, officers found black polyethylene boxes hidden under the floor of the truck. These boxes later contained non-duty paid cigarettes, the ICA said in a press release
Less than an hour later, at 2:50 am, in another Malaysia cargo truck registered in Malaysia, similar black polyethylene packages containing cigarettes not cleared under the floor
Cigarettes and unlicensed vehicles were turned over to Singapore Customs for further investigation.
Vehicles used to commit such offenses are liable to be confiscated. The duty and the goods and services tax on unpaid cigarettes for the two cases amounted to about S $ 702,927 and S $ 51,240 respectively.
