SINGAPORE – A new multi-agency working group has been set up to explore ideas on how to encourage Singaporeans to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
The task force, chaired by Dr. Amrin Amin, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Home Affairs, will hold public consultations from January to May next year to share ideas on health promotion.
He will also coordinate the efforts of various government agencies such as the Ministry of National Development and the Ministry of Social and Family Development, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong announced on Sunday.
Speaking at an event marking World Diabetes Day at the Suntec Convention and Exhibition Center in Singapore, Mr. Gan said the working group would focus on three key areas: the transformation of the environment in which people live, empowering individuals through technology and community engagement with better delivery service and programs.
This is because the government's "war on diabetes" has provided a solid foundation for further health promotion, Gan said.
Since the declaration of the war on diabetes in 2016, healthier and more accessible food choices and beverages have increased, and efforts to encourage active lifestyles among Singaporeans have continued, Gan said.
For example, in June of this year, more than 6,500 food and beverage stalls offer healthier options on their menu as part of a Health Promotion Council's healthier meal program. he noted.
"In addition to improving the quality of food and physical activity, we need to better integrate, coordinate and intensify efforts to instill health in all aspects of Singaporeans' lives," said M Gan.
