Jon Flanagan’s performance for Rangers on Thursday has prompted a strong reaction from some of the Ibrox faithful.

Flanagan, who was brought to Rangers by his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard in the summer, set up Daniel Candeias to score the Gers’ second goal of the night against Spartak Moscow.

But his defending, it seems, left much to be desired, after Rangers, who led three times in the Russian capital, collapsed to lose 4-3.

A Roman Eremenko own goal and two at the right end from Candeias and Glenn Middleton, were cancelled out by strikes from Lorenzo Melgarejo, Connor Goldson – who joined Eremenko by putting past his own goalkeeper – and Luis Adriano, before Sofiane Hanni’s winner – which arrived barely a minute after the Brazilian’s leveller – at the Otkritie Arena.

The result leaves Rangers, who had an Alredo Morelos goal wrongly ruled out at 3-2, third in Europa League Group G, with two games left to play.
