Ratchanok, Pornpawee made to toil

Ratchanok Intanon and Pornpawee Chochuwong advanced to the second round of the US$400,000 Hong Kong Open on Wednesday.

Sixth seed Ratchanok needed three games to overcome Sayaka Sato of Japan 20-22, 21-13, 21-15, while Pornpawee pulled off a major upset by knocking out fourth seed Chen Yufei of China 14-21, 21-10, 22-20 at Hong Kong Coliseum in Kowloon.

Chen won the Fuzhou China Open on Sunday. She defeated Ratchanok in the quarter-finals in Fuzhou.

Nitchaon Jindapol, however, failed to progress after losing to third seed PV Sindhu of India 15-21, 21-13, 17-21.

Busanan Ongbamrungphan also crashed out, losing to Olympic and world champion Carolina Marin of Spain 10-21, 18-21.

Ratchanok will meet China’s Chen Xiaoxin in the second round today, when Pornpawee will play Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark.

Marin, who is seeded fifth in Hong Kong, will take on Michelle Li of Canada in the last 16 round.

In the men’s singles event, Khosit Phetpradab and Kantaphon Wangcharoen marched into the second round but Suppanyu Avihingsanon and Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk bowed out.

Khosit rallied to beat Sai Praneeth B of India 16-21, 21-11, 21-15, while Kantaphon defeated Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong 21-15, 21-16.

Suppanyu lost to Sameer Verma of India 17-21, 14-21 before Tanongsak fell to sixth seed Son Wan-Ho of South Korea 19-21, 18-21.

The two women’s doubles pairs were both victorious on Wednesday.

Eighth seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai beat Gong Xue Xin and Ng Weng Chi of Macau 21-8, 21-3, while Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai beat Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao of Japan 19-21, 21-18, 24-22.

Nipitphon Phuangphuapet and Savitree Amitrapai also advanced in the mixed doubles event. The Thai duo beat Ou Xuanyi and Feng Xueying of China 22-20, 21-23, 21-17.

But the men’s doubles pair of Bodin Isara and Maneepong Jongjit failed to get past the first hurdle, losing 12-21, 18-21 to Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy of India.
