Samsung Galaxy Watch leaks: Apple Watch beware

[ad_1]

Today, a data leak on the upcoming Samsung Gear S4 (aka Galaxy Watch) suggests a leading competitor for the most fashionable devices on the market. Just like the tablet market, Apple seems to have almost crushed the competition in smartwatches. * But with the market expected to increase over the next two years (to a great extent, apparently,) Samsung could be in a prime position to grab some of the money. If only they had a winning brand name.

* When I suggest that the Apple Watch dominates the wearables market, I look at the IDC figures that suggest that Apple holds 16.1% of the global market. This is up 13.5% over last year's same quarter, where Apple held 14.3% of the market. The closest competitor is Xiaomi, which remains relegated to China with 14.8% of the market, then Fitbit 8.7% globally, against 12.2% in the same quarter a year ago.

According to the Top 5 Wearables companies in the world as followed by IDC, Samsung is not even in the mix. The most powerful group in the world is the "other" category, suggesting that if Apple and Xiaomi embark on global growth in the global market, there are a whole bunch of other companies that are tearing the market in the world. Almost like there was no clear discernment among consumers looking for a smartwatch – as long as it's smart.

Samsung has a great opportunity here. According to Ice Universe on Twitter Samsung may well call their next smartwatch "Galaxy Watch". The rest of the details pale in comparison to this major change in methodology. The device will probably run Wear OS (what we called Android Wear), will use a battery of 470 mAh, will use PLP technology and the ability to read the blood pressure of the wearer. But that's what counts.

Samsung calls its main smartwatch brand "Gear S." So you have the Samsung Gear S, Gear S2, etc. It was nonsense, and clearly did not make Samsung major favors in the global wearables market. But Samsung is doing a high quality product, and they can not be caught without any offers in the space at all, so they stay with the brand Gear S.

Now, if they change to Samsung Galaxy Watch, they have a much clearer and more specific message to sell. It's like in the 1950s, when companies began to listen to graphic designers and advertising agencies, changing their names from Johnathan Gregory's "Industrial Drill Bits Incorporated" to "BitCo" – simplification. Samsung already has "Galaxy" as a global brand, and "Samsung" is a given, so there is not really need to go further.

Samsung Galaxy Watch – here it is. This is an extension of the most popular brand of business, in a watch. Look for this device to sell more units than any Samsung smart watch made before, regardless of specifications. Mark my words (as long as Samsung uses this name).
