SINGAPORE: Good news for bird lovers in Singapore – Jurong Bird Park has acquired a pair of rare Shoebill Birds for the Wetlands Park exhibition
The arrival birds will make Jurong Bird Park the only zoological institution in the Southeast. Asia where visitors will see the species, Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) – which manages the park – said in a press release Thursday (July 12).
Flying Qatar in June, the An 11-year-old female and a 17-year-old female will join other critically endangered wetland birds in the park.
Native to tropical East Africa, Beak-in-Beaks, also known as Balaeniceps rex, are classified as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation's Red List of Threatened Species of nature. They face threats such as habitat loss and illegal trade in wildlife.
According to the WRS, there are only 30 cloggers under human surveillance in the world and about 5,000 to 8,000 birds in the wild.
Birds – who can live up to 35 years in the wild – are named for their large, shoe-shaped bills, which are over 20cm long and have a sharp hook at the end to kill prey .
Their food consists mainly of fish, the marne-eaters also consume amphibians, snakes, rodents and even baby crocodiles
Jurong Bird Park introduced Shoebills for the first time in 1995, and its last specimen died in 2015.
WRS stated that the Park was hoping to raise the pair "With only two recorded cases of successful breeding as part of reported human care, Jurong Bird Park hopes to raise the couple and help better understand the biology of this amazing species," he says.
