Instagram launched IGTV last month celebrating the achievement of a billion users on the platform. Presented as a TV alternative in their ad, IGTV offers various features to users who like to post more than just pictures of their meals on their feeds.
But with so many video services competing for your opinions, does IGTV have a unique factor that can attract viewers and creators? Let's find out.
1. Native Portrait Video Support
By default, our smartphones are in portrait mode most of the time. So why should you rotate your phone to watch a video? The main feature of IGTV seems to be inspired by this thought.
Portrait video is the default view for application videos. You can not show video orientation even if you switch to full screen or rotate your device. Thus, IGTV encourages its creators to make videos in portrait mode.
Instagram added video support in 2013. Initially, users could only download 15 seconds of video, which was extended to 1 minute
IGTV does not have this limit my is Instagram mentioned in their ad that videos can be up to one hour long. So not entirely limitless. But I do not see this as a problem because the most popular videos average about 10 minutes.
3. Creators = Channels
While Instagram has projected IGTV as a TV competitor, we all know that the real competitors are the other popular streaming services like Vimeo, Dailymotion, and the big elephant in the room, YouTube.
Just as YouTube has channels, IGTV has creators, which are strings with the same name as the Instagram Creators ID. And like YouTube, there are sections for you (recommended), popular (trend) and next (subscriptions) that show the relevant videos.
4. Smartphone only … For the moment
Currently, IGTV has applications for only two smartphone platforms, Android and iOS. And it's accessible only by application. Which means that there is no website on which you can go on your laptop or PC for a bigger screen experience.
Instagram has also not indicated its intention to support any of the following. other platforms in their Blog ad. But that could change in the future as all major IGTV competitors, with the exception of television, have a front-end website as well as apps.
Content … or Lack Thereof
The greatest feature or attraction of any streaming service, audio or video, is the content. More diverse and quality content attracts more viewers. Unfortunately, IGTV is very lacking in this area. But it is understandable that the new platform has barely a month
The majority of the content you find is already downloaded videos from existing Instagram users and mainly re-downloaded YouTube videos by ch Popular YouTube stars. And get ready to see black stripes because a lot of downloaded YouTube videos are taken in widescreen format
Is IGTV worth your time?
Currently, in its infancy, IGTV is the new thing that everyone wants to check out and go forward, but it quickly becomes boring. Lack of content is the major hurdle right now. But this will change as the word spreads and more creators of quality content are on board
But for that, IGTV must do things correctly. The videos in portrait mode are cool and unique, but landscaping options should be available. Finally, access reserved for applications for a video streaming service is restrictive for users. Hopefully Instagram will fix them soon.
So what do you think of IGTV? Are you going to spend your time on it? Let us know in the comments.
